It was at the invitation of Yves Geleyn that 5•5 created the exhibit design for Motion Factory. As we are ourselves 'do-it-yourselfers' in our approach to design, as well as lovers of 'homemade' objects, we were inevitably struck by the concept of this exhibit, which wishes to present to the general public the magic of these objects from animated films, momentary stars that are normally left to gather dust in boxes or shelves.
We wanted to bring visitors backstage to show them a real animated movie factory. It was therefore a large story workshop, presenting fifteen 'Film Manufacturers', that we installed at the Gaîté Lyrique for the exhibit. It is fascinating to enter the world of each 'manufacturer' to discover his tools and his models that only exist as images, as well as his workers, expertise, tricks and manufacturing secrets that bring the images to life. As visitors explore the exhibit, they discover the production lines as the film is being manufactured. From the work boards on which the first sketches are pinned, we slowly advance towards the mock-ups and, finally, the first animated images.
